Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have just found out that my my HDL total is 6,3 and I have been prescribed Pravastatin. I am 42, eat well and am very healthy. My doctor said that it is likely that my levels are genetic and not because of my diet/lifestyle. What do you think ? 6,3 is high ? Will I have to be on this medication all my life ?
The information you have provided is very limited to answer your question about whether you will need to be on medications lifelong. Your complete blood lipid profile would have been helpful.
Normal levels of HDL is more than 60mg/dL, which is true in your case (63mg/dL). HDL is a “good cholesterol” that helps increase the clearance of bad cholesterol in the blood. Your doctor must have prescribed Pravastatin to lower bad cholesterol (LDL, triglycerides, cholesterol etc.) assuming that their levels are high. If so then lifestyle changes and statin should keep your lipid levels in check. However, frequent monitoring of your blood levels is needed. Regular daily exercise is highly recommended in cases similar to yours.
Hope this helps.
