What Are The Possible Treatments For Meningitis?

My 10 week old daughter was diagnosed with meningitis from unknown cause on day 4 of life. She was treated for early septic shock and 21 days of antibiotics in the NICU. At time of discharge there were no concerns. At her 8 week well baby check up I had some concerns, mainly lack of eye contact, the way she holds her head (often to the right), not turning to noise and a few more. My family Dr. thought we should bump up our paediatrician appt to the following week. At the appt with the paediatrician he was also concerned with the lack of eye contact but also how she holds her body (still very much like a newborn - tight) and her hands are often in fists up at her chest. He described her reflexes as very brisk. We were then admitted and had an EEG and MRI completed. The EEG showed some abnormal results lasting approx 2 sec.(all I was told so far) but there was no clinical evidence of the abnormal activity. The MRI was normal. The paediatrician has started her on phenobarbital 12.5mg 2x a day. I am concerned with taking the phenobarb for her development. Is it an appropriate treatment. Also, how does this treatment address her lack of eye contact and her "fisting" or "posturing" as they described it?

Pediatrician 's  Response
meningitis in neonatal age has few consequences at times. assuming that your baby was full term at birth...symptoms of tightness in body, not achieving eye contact, brisk reflexes as explained to you are signs of some amount affected brain leading to developmental problems. but before making any diagnosis its important to scrutinise n observe child's milestones as they appear...n then decide. well regarding phenobarb..its good that it has been started considering eeg findings. in right doses it will not have any bad effect on development. well observe milestones carefully. kindly get hearing and vision tested. give all vaccinations including hemophilous influenzae. if tightness persists thdn child might require physio n occupational therapy later.
