What Are The Potential Side Effects Of Taking Contraceptive Pills?

Hi doctor :) I am 37 years old (163 cm, 52 kg). My boyfriend wants me to take birth control pills (he got me a pack of Daphne). I have never taken such pills before, but I read its brochure and discovered I have to be careful taking it because my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, stage 2 last year. She had a surgery (they removed only 1/4 of her breast, plus a few lymph nodes) followed by 8 sessions of chem therapy and 30 sessions of radiotherapy. She is perfectly fine now. My question is if it is advisable I take contraceptives of any form. If yes, should I take my first Daphne pill on the first day of my bleeding period? Thank you very much for your help

Hi,

Daphne contains lynestrenol which is a progestin only pill that contains very low doses of progestin similar to the natural hormone, progesterone in a woman's body. It consists of 28 white uncoated pill and is intended for conception. Daphne is a hormonal contraceptive of choice for breastfeeding mother because it doesn't affect lactation or infant growth. Daphne works primarily by thickening cervical mucus and disrupting menstrual cycle, including preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries.

Daphne is used for contraception, notably in cases of intolerance to estrogen-progesterone combined pills or when the estrogens are contraindicated. Take one pill daily, beginning of the first day of menstrual bleeding. Patients may also start any day as long as patient is not pregnant but use a backup method such as condom for the next seven days as a precaution to avoid pregnancy. A pack is good for 28 days. Start a new pack the next day after taking the last pill. Before start or stop taking this medication, you should consult your doctor first.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
