Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Are The Side Effects Of Cortisone Shots For Pain Management?
My mom has been on pain medication for ten years for a lot of damage to her back that has deamed her disabled. The pain medication (vicodin 5/500) has always worked to take the edge off her pain and allow her to have quality of life. Just recently with all the pain medication abuse her Dr. is feeling nervous like alot of other Dr.s , and is now wanting her to see a pain dr. who is wanting to give her cortisone shots in her back once a week. My question is how dangerous are these injections with an already compromised liver dueto hepatitus C?
If it is livercirrhosis then caution should be taken, guidance and dose modification are needed. If she benefits from it then ultimately the dose can be controlled. There are other options available, you can consult a doctor. One new technique is the optimizing energy 'Art of Living' workshop. It can provide great help. It is only a pain oriented program, she must attend it.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Sunny Madar, General & Family Physician
