What Are The Side Effects Of Norethisterone Tablets?

Hi i have been prescribed norethisterone 5mg tablets 3 x daily day 5-24 for 4 months for endometriosis, how will this help me for this period and when I stop taking them am I likely to continue with any side effects or will it just leave my system naturally? Also I told my gynaecologist I was lactose intolerant but have noticed there are lactose sugars as an ingredient, should I ask for an alternative or see how I go on?

Hi,

Common side effects of Norethisterone tablets include headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, and changes in menstrual bleeding. Other possible side effects include acne, depression, weight gain, and changes in libido.

However, everyone's body may react differently to the medication, some people may experience no side effects, or some may experience more severe side effects; it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns or experience any unusual symptoms while taking the medication.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

General & Family Physician Dr. Dr. Nupur K's  Response
Hello,

You have been prescribed Norethisterone tablets by your treating doctor for endometriosis. Norethisterone is used to treat menstrual disorders, endometriosis, or abnormal vaginal bleeding caused by a hormone imbalance. It is helpful. You can ask your treating doctor for an alternative medicine if you so desire.

You can take two 5mg tablets twice a day, every day, for four to six months, starting on day five of your cycle. Your bleeding will usually stop during the treatment; if you get any spotting your doctor may increase your dose. If your system does not respond to treatment and you continue to bleed, you will be recommended to get hysterectomy done especially if you have completed your family.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
