What Are The Side Effects Of Benadryl?

I have had WPW in the past and hand a successful ablation. I have had skipped beats for years , but recently have had an increase 6-10 in an hour. I have had an EKG, (normal) echo (mild mitral and aortic valve regurgitation. I will be wearing a monitor soon. I have also had a lot of stress lately. Could the Benadryl I sometimes take to sleep at night cause this. I am a 59 yr. old female.

Hi,

Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an antihistamine used to treat allergies and symptoms of the common cold. While it is generally considered safe, it can have some side effects, especially at higher doses or with prolonged use. Common side effects of Benadryl include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation.

In rare cases, Benadryl can cause more serious side effects, such as irregular heartbeats, or arrhythmias. While it is uncommon for Benadryl to cause arrhythmias, it is a possibility, especially in individuals with a history of arrhythmias or heart disease. In your case, given your history of WPW and successful ablation, it is possible that the skipped beats you are experiencing could be related to Benadryl use.

It is recommended that you speak with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and medications, including Benadryl, to determine if there is any correlation between your symptoms and the medication. Additionally, the stress you have been experiencing may also be a contributing factor to your symptoms and should be discussed with your healthcare provider as well.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
