Hello, My 15-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with chronic migraine as of 11/11. CT and MRI done 1/12 were both negative. She also gets frequent tension headaches. One of her triggers seems to be whenever she gets the hiccups. Why would hiccups cause a headache?
I had gone through your question I can understand your concern about the cause of your daughters migraine.
As you had mentioned that your daughter gets migraine attack (episode) when she gets hiccups. Migraine is a condition in which the brain blood vessels gets contracted and reduce blood flow to Brain because of some particular trigger factor ( hiccups in your daughters case). When ever there is pressure difference between blow and above diaphragm, for example stuck food in esophagus to maintain that hiccups occur. These are the nerve endings which gets stimulated and signals brain to rescue and hiccups happen. Same way the the nerve signals brain to contract blood vessels to prevent more blood flow. Thus reduced blood flow to Brain causes hypoxia and leads to migraine.
To adopt the stimulus your daughter needs to take prophylaxis for migraine like propranolol or divalproex for 2-3 months in consultation with your treating doctor.
Hope you will understand my point of view, in case of further assistance write to us if you feel any further help needed.
