What Are The Symptoms And Treatment For Sleep Apnea?

I think my son has sleep apnea. He makes gasping noises, breathes loudly, a little snoring but is a loud sleeper and at times does not breath for up to 14 seconds at a time. This evening i notices that his entire mouth was covered in foam while sleeping. I plan on asking a doctor about it but was going to wait until I could video tape his pauses in breathing. (He usually does that more so when he is sick or not feeling well) What do you think? He is 6 years old.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Sleep apnea occurs when a person stops breathing while sleeping. The person can present with loud snoring, daytime sleepiness, fatigue, difficult awakening, and headache. Children also can have nightmares or bedwetting.

If your child is having breath pauses, it may be due to airway obstruction. I suggest to take him to the pediatrician or an ENT doctor to look for large tonsils, nasal turbinate hypertrophy, or any other airway obstruction. If everything is fine, then maybe he will need a polysomnography to determine the cause of the pauses.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Arturo Benítez-Serrato
