What Causes Sleep Apnea? What Are The Symptoms?

I am 45 year old white male. I am 5'10", 205 lbs. I was medically discharged from the US Navy in 1995 with Hodgkin's Disease. I have hypothyroidism from radiation treatment. In 2009 I had a heart attack, attributed to the radiation treatment and arteries, resulting in 2 stents. Last month I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I have read that there is a significant relationship between these conditions. What is the likelyhood that sleep apnea is a result of either or both of my previous conditions?

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Yes there is a relation between the issues. Your weight first of all seems to be high, overweight is related to sleep apnea. Hypothyroidism in addition predisposes to sleep apnea due to the deposition of some proteins in the airway walls and also due to muscle weakness.

I hope to have been of help.
