Bipolar disorder can be genetic. Chances of getting bipolar disorder in first degree relatives are high when any of the two parents has bipolar disorder. But it is not always universal. Bipolar disorder can occur even without any family history of bipolar disorder. Hereditary is one of the causative components of bipolar disorder. This applies to other mental disorders also. Effective treatment is available for bipolar disorder. Family history does not imply that you are suffering from bipolar disorder and bipolar disorder does not affect all family members even if family history is positive. Bipolar disorder is diagnosed by some diagnostic criteria which can only be done by
psychiatrist. Your psychiatrist has ruled out bipolar disorder in you. So, there is no need to worry. You are worried because you have family history of bipolar disorder. Bipolar is characterized by
mania and
depression. Only depression is not bipolar.
