What Are The Symptoms Of Bipolar Depression?

I have suffered with depression since 2011. I have a family history of bipolar which my sister, two nieces, and Nephew suffer from. My psychiatrist says I m not bipolar, but I feel that I have bipolar depression because of the length of time I ve suffered. Can you offer me any advice?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Bipolar disorder can be genetic. Chances of getting bipolar disorder in first degree relatives are high when any of the two parents has bipolar disorder. But it is not always universal. Bipolar disorder can occur even without any family history of bipolar disorder. Hereditary is one of the causative components of bipolar disorder. This applies to other mental disorders also. Effective treatment is available for bipolar disorder. Family history does not imply that you are suffering from bipolar disorder and bipolar disorder does not affect all family members even if family history is positive. Bipolar disorder is diagnosed by some diagnostic criteria which can only be done by psychiatrist. Your psychiatrist has ruled out bipolar disorder in you. So, there is no need to worry. You are worried because you have family history of bipolar disorder. Bipolar is characterized by mania and depression. Only depression is not bipolar.
For depression you can take fluoxetine. But this is prscription based medicine. Consult you psychiatrist for written prescription.
Advice
1.     Regular exercise at least 30 minutes for 5 days in a week such as walking, jogging and swimming
2.     Do meditation
3.     Take bath two times daily with normal water
4.     Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol
5.     Avoid smoking, alcohol, coffee and caffeinated beverages
I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question
