These gram negative bacilli have the property of colonizing devices and hence cause device associated infections. E.coli and Proteus are coliforms which are usually present in the gastrointestinal tract as commensals and cause infection when the patient's immunity reduces. Pseudomonas is one of the most common bacteria causing hospital acquired infection.
