Hello,
I read carefully your concern.
Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain and it's role is to stimulate the breast to produce milk after childbirth.
The high levels of this hormone out of the pregnancy and lactation are caused in most of the cases by a benign tumor of the pituitary gland.
The severity of the symptoms or side effects that can cause depends on the level of prolactin. If it is just above the normal ranges, usually it is caused by a small tumor and you may not take treatment if your menstrual cycle is regular and you do not have a pregnancy plan. You just have to check the prolactin level every 6 months.
If the levels are too high (above 5 times the normal levels) than you should start treatment because it is caused by a big tumor (over 1 cm) and the treatment prevents further grow of the tumor.
Hope i have been helpful.
It will be a pleasure to help you further.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
