What Are The Symptoms Of Tmj And How To Cure It ?

i am a 22 yr old girl i got orthodontic treatment done to improve malalignment of my anterior teeth. My lower teeth initially before the treatment was inclined inwards and my upper teeth was straight, which would make my chin look protruding. My orthodontist told me that he would bring forward my upper teeth and then my lower teeth to restore my bite.He has brought out my upper teeth but has not brought out my lower teeth due to which there remains a gap of about 1/2 cm between the lower and upper set of teeth. my both the set of teeth do not touch while i talk. the doctor says that he ll let the gap remain. i still have my braces on . Past 6 days i have been suffering pain in my jaw joints and i cant open my mouth, neither can i smile without hurting. is this TMJ and is this happening because of the orthodontic treatment. will the tmj pain go away once the lower teeth is made to touch the upper teeth.. please help!!!!!

Hi Neha,

There is 1/2 cm of gap between upper and lower teeth, i suggest that this is normal.
usually there is an overjet present in normal dentition means upper incisor does not touch lower incisor rather they overlap lower teeth to make an overjet on them.

About your problem of pain while opening the mouth. tell your doctor clearly about your problem, he will check for the occlusion and vertical overlap of the teeth. if everything is normal. massage and exercise will help you.

Thanks,

Dr. vishal Jain, vitaldent, faridabad.
