What Can Be Done To Prevent Pregnancy If I Have Had Unprotected Sex?

Hi, I had my period from Friday, January 3rd to Wednesday January 8th. My husband and I had sex on the Friday after noon January 10th. We normally just use the pull out method but on Friday I didn't get off in time and some of his sperm shot up inside of me. When I came off of him his sperm continued to come out and it was a lot so I'm not to sure how much went inside of me. We aren't planning on having children at the moment so I took 5 Alysena 28 pills at 11pm and was told by a nurse to take another 5 , 12 hours after; she said that would add up to the amount of a plan b pill. (Note: I did not take the Alysena 28 pills at all before this situation) I know it says there will be a little spotting for some people when they take the pill but today i went to the washroom and noticed a lot of brown blood on my underwear. Its been bleeding/ spotting for about 8 hours now. The blood is dark red and when I wipe its like light pink. One point today there was a drop in the toilet that was dark dark red. I just wanted to know is this all normal? Or is there a possibility I may be pregnant? I went to my doctor today as soon as the bleeding started and he said it should only be light and would go away but I'm concerned because it hasn't gone away as yet. Also my doctor said I have to wait until I miss my period to take a pregnancy test, which would be 18 days from now, Were really nervous and I don't like surprises like my period not coming. Just trying to figure this out. Thank you for your help.

Dear member,
Thanks for writing to healthcare magic.
first let us evaluate the chance of you getting pregnant in this cycle. Though ovulation cannot be predicted 100 percent the chance that you would have ovulated on day 8 of cycle is very remote unless you have irregular cycles or 24_26 day cycles. You did well by taking the plan b or equivalent(pills in 72 hours of unprotected sex. ) This delays ovulation. The bleeding is due to the hormone in the pills. It's is very important that you abstain till your next cycle.
your doctor mentioned there is no way of knowing you are pregnant till the next period which if you miss you can do a blood or urine test for the same. Also as this plan b is only an emergency method of prevention and failure rates are high compared to regularly using oral contraceptive pills which are safe, predictable and have low failure rates.
please write if you have any further queries.

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Yes, after taking 10 of those pills, you would have withdrawal bleed.
The amount of bleeding you experienced would come under the category of normal.
It should subside in a few days.
Also you should know that the intake of these pills would alter your normal expected periods.
They could be preponed or postponed by a week, or sometimes more, upto ten days.
So it is not for sure that you would have your period on the 18th, even if you are not pregnant !
This uncertainty is why these pills are never a good idea when taken as an emergency contraceptive.
The only way to be sure is to take a pregnancy test 4 weeks after the episode of unprotected sex.
Yes, you would not know till then.
All the best.
Take care.
