Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m a 53 years old and premenopausal. Recent blood test revealed my red blood cells are enlarged (102). Possibly, from heavy alcohol in my past. I quit drinking April 15, due to a major sinking spell. I thought I was dying! Blood test read my liver enzymes are good! Also, both of my parents had this problem because of autoimmune disorders. There is family history of it. Q: Did I quit drinking in time to save my liver? Q: Is this problem reversable?
Can you mention your hemoglobin level? Anemia with large RBCs (megaloblastic anemia) is usually caused by deficiency of vitamin B9 or B12, although rarely this can be familial too. Alcoholism can contribute to this, as it interferes with B9.
If the liver enzymes are normal and no evidence of cirrhosis in ultrasound, stopping alcoholism can arrest further progression of liver injury(means you have stopped before irreversible damage), and the condition can be reversed with proper supplementation.
If I were your treating doctor, I would have ordered a serum B9 and B12 level, and supplement if deficient. Your doctor will guide you. Meanwhile, take plenty of green leafy vegetables (B9). B12 is plenty in non-vegetarian items.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
