What Causes HPV Infection?

I just had a pap smear done and the pap smear was normal but it showed that they detected hpv for the first time. I have only one sex partner for 9-1/2 years and all my previous pap smear did not show hpv. How is it possible that it came it this time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
There are many subtypes of HPV virus that can infect humans ,subtype 6 and 11 tend to cause anogenital warts while types 16 and 32 cause invasive cervical cancer .However all infections don't cause invasive cancer because they get healed completely and only a percentage of infections (say 5 to 10%) tend to cause invasive cervical cancer .Various vaccines like cervarix and gardasil will help in reducing the chances of cancer or warts from the major subtypes of HPV virus. Infections tend be acquired from various sources only sexual route is not the only one. Consutl your gynaecologist and take suggestions regarding the vaccine to be taken.
Hope this information might be helpful to you.
