What Causes A Brownish Tinge In Urine And Strep Throat?

About 4 weeks ago I noticed that my urine was a very dark brown. I thought it was because I was dehydrated due to being diagnosed with strep throat (I was given an antibiotic). However, 4 weeks later it is still dark and now I m having pain in my lower back on the right side. I am not taking any vitamins or any other medicine. Do you think this is an infection or something else?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The brownish tinge in urine can be an indication of several underlying conditions, such as liver or kidney problems, dehydration, or urinary tract infection. It is also possible that the antibiotics used to treat your strep throat may have contributed to the discoloration of your urine. Pain in the lower back on the right side could be an indication of a kidney or bladder infection, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as frequent urination, fever, or pain during urination.

It is recommended that you see a healthcare professional for an evaluation to determine the cause of the discoloration and pain. They may ask for a urine sample to check for infection or perform blood tests to evaluate liver or kidney function. Treatment options will depend on the underlying cause and severity of the condition.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
