Hello,
I think your concern is definitely valid for the mentioned problem.
No, it is not normal for a person to fall asleep during a social/interactive session.
Regarding the constant
snoring, the most common reason is being overweight/
obese. The fact that he takes frequent naps during the day points to the observation that he does not have a refreshing night sleep, leaving him tired and sleepy frequently during the day.
Snoring occurs due to obstruction of his wind-pipe (pharynx-trachea region) by fall of the tongue backwards in mouth during deep sleep. This leads to lack of oxygen flow to the lungs and ultimately the person wakes up from sleep feeling suffocated, and changes his posture to adjust the opening for air in the wind-pipe (that would indicate sleep apnoea). Do check if he has such experiences during the night sleep.
The most convenient way to reduce this problem is to cut down on the weight (if he is obese) by exercises and a balanced diet, in addition to posture changes during sleep i.e. preferring to sleep on his sides than on the back on the bed. This will also ensure a better quality of sleep, in turn reducing the day-time sleepiness.
Severe cases are dealt with specialist care and treatment options like
positive airway pressure by
oxygen mask or rarely a surgical option. However, these don't seem to be needed unless routine measures fail to help.
Hope i have addressed your concern. Feel free to communicate for further queries.
