What Causes Abdominal Cramping And Light Brown Discharge During Pregnancy?

Hi. I am 5 weeks pregnant and have started having some abdominal cramping yesterday and a couple of hours ago I had a small amount of brown discharge. Does this mean I am having a miscarriage? I am 43 yrs old and had a miscarriage last year. I am hoping this is not another one. Thanks for your time....Kellie

Hi,
In the current scenario, it appears as though your pregnancy is at stake, sorry to say and I would ask you to get help immediately. Please refrain from all stressful activity including intercourse and take absolute bed rest. Please get a sonogram, preferably trans-vaginal as soon as possible to know the viability and also to plan further management based on that. You can also check serial serum beta-hCG titres to see if the values double every 2-3 days suggesting good progress or if they fall in case of a miscarriage. If progress is good, you may be advised hormone supplements to arrest the spotting. Hope this helps.
