What Causes Acid Reflux And Nausea After A Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

53 yr old female....240 lbs. had 2 umbilical hernia surgeries and dbl mastectomy all about 6-8 yrs ago. Had breast reconstruction 3 weeks ago. I have acid reflux to begin with, but, last week I started experiencing tightening, burning and cramping in the upper center area of my abdomen...between the esophagus & stomach. I then became nauseous and vomited some pretty acidic bile that gave me a sore throat for over 24 hours while in pain. The ER docs said ct scan didn’t pick anything up. I’m treading very carefully now because I still have cramping and it’s accompanied by nausea. I don’t mind throwing up because I know it can rid the body of toxins if need be, but I lost 10 lbs from last weeks marathon. The cramps are spreading up & across my chest as well. I also get a thick coat of acidic phlegm as this happens.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* As per my surgical experience, the acid reflux and nausea in post-operative period is associated commonly with

- stress
- side effect of certain antibiotics, anti inflammatory drugs given for surgical recovery - other causes of gastritis.

I advise to discuss the matter with your surgeon`s office assistant and get precise management guidelines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
