What Causes Acute Parotitis And Fever?

I was recently diagnosed with parotitis.. the doctor didnt seem to concerned bc it wasnt very bad at the time... he couldt feel any stones and didnt see any major concern of infection.. so he gave me a script for antibiotics just in case and told me to wait it out.. its been 3 days and the condition has gotten considerably worse.. very tender, swollen and i feel almost run down plus a little feverish.. should i be concerned or just wait it out?

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Acute Parotitis can be caused by a number of causes that is bacterial or viral infection, obstruction of the gland or its duct etc..

As you are also having fever it is most probably due to infection..

So my suggestion is to consult another Physician and get evaluated and a saliva culture and a blood test and also an x ray or CT Scan of the gland can help in confirmation of the diagnosis..

You can be advised appropriate antibiotics if the strain of the organism/ bacteria is ruled out in the culture and along with it anti inflammatory medication can be done..

Also doing cool compresses over the gland and gently massaging the gland can help in relief..

Take Acetaminophen to reduce temperature..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
