Twice within a week, I have seen blood when I went to the bathroom and expelled. I thought i had to defecate. the blood was bright red, and quite a bit. I have been taking a couple new high blood pressure pills for about one week. Can either of these meds cause of bleeding? The medicines are: Metoprolol 25 mg once a day Hyralazine started with 25 mg then started 50 mg a few days later

Hello,

As per your clinical history is concerned, please follow like this -

1) Do a clinical exam by your doctor [gastroenterologist] and tell your doctor to do one colonoscopy.

2) Do take your blood pressure medication as usual as it has no relation with rectal bleeding.

3) Discuss with your doctor about permanent treatment plan as per clinical findings only.

Do follow lifestyle modifications like this-

1) Try to eat high-fiber foods. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Doing so softens the stool and increases its bulk, which will help you avoid the straining that can cause hemorrhoids or worsen symptoms from existing hemorrhoids.

2) Drink plenty of fluids. Drink more than eight glasses of water and other liquids (not alcohol) each day to help keep stools soft.

3) Do take a stool softener if you have constipation history and you can take at bedtime.

4) Don't strain. Straining and holding your breath when trying to pass a stool creates greater pressure in the veins in the lower rectum.

5) Go to the toilet as soon as you feel the urge.

6) Do exercise regularly. Stay active to help prevent constipation and to reduce pressure on veins, which can occur with long periods of standing or sitting. Exercise can also help you lose excess weight.

7) Try to avoid long periods of sitting. Sitting too long, particularly on the toilet, can increase the pressure on the veins in the anus.
