What Causes Ascites In A 84 Old Suffering With Stage Four Ovarian Cancer?

My mother age 84 was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer 18 months ago. She was not a candidate for surgery or other treatments. She has severe ascites and is very weak with decreased appetite. She denies being in pain and has no problems thus far with bowel or bladder function. I am an R.N and have asked to speak with my mom's doctor re:prognosis but he will not speak to me and during her visits to him he only takes her blood pressure. I am feeling quite frustrated as my sense is that her time is limited but I have no clear plan and I am her only caregiver. Any suggestions?

Ascites is caused by abnormal cells producing extra fluid in the peritoneal cavity. It is not okay that her doctor will not talk to you. I suggest that you go with her to her next appointment and insist that the doctor talk to you. If you do not get answers I suggest that you change doctors.
