What Causes Bad Smell In Nose While Suffering From Nasal Congestion?

Every time my husband gets a congested nose, a very bad smell is emitted from his nose and the smell is sometime so strong, the whole room will stink of it. The smell comes from green dry mucus that gets stuck in his nose and when emitted the mucus stings. This has lowered his self esteem so much so that he has become a recluse. Please help as to what the possible causes are and how we can fix this. He also snores louder then normal. Thank you very much appreciate your help.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain congestion, bad smell from nose and release of green and dry mucous seems to be most commonly due to Sinus infection or Sinusitis.
As the sinuses drains through nose therefore infection and fluid accumulation in sinuses lead to congestion, bad smell and discharge from nose..
I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like PNS Vie x ray or MRI scan can help in diagnosis and treated accordingly..
You can be advised a long course of antibiotics, anti inflammatory painkiller, decongestants like Pseudoephadrine, mucolytics that loosens the mucous and ease in drainage like Ambroxol..
You can also do saline nasal irrigations, steam inhalations and use decongestnat nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline..
Use a humidifier in your room..
In case if still there is no improvement you can be advised Endoscopic Sinus Surgery..
