What Causes Belching After Aortic Valve Replacement?
I just had an aortic valve replaced three weeks ago. The new valve was a tissue valve. For some reason I seem to belch after meals and even later more than I ever did. Could it be bad dijestion from a lack of blodd flow or is it simple because I swollow more air when I eat?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. Aortic valve replacement is a major surgical procedure and hence can have some direct or indirect complications or sequel. Since you have developed belching after meals and that too started after the aortic valve replacement. Te most probable cause is GERD in which case the lower esophageal sphincter gets lax and allows the air to escape upwards in the form of belching; more after food/meals means that there may be a large extent of stress and/or anxiety due to surgery that is causing aerophagia and thus resultant belching./ I would advise you the following in such a situation: Get a prescription for Domperidone and Ranitidine and this may help a lot. Chew properly, eat very slowly swallow slowly. Do not allow emotions or stress or anxiety to overcome the normal though process to avoid the aerophagia. If this doe not help much, you may need an upper GI Endoscopy to know the cause and get further management as per the findings.
