What Causes Bitter Taste In Mouth While Suffering From Hiatal Hernia?

I am 93 years old and have been diagnosed with a large sliding hiatal hernia. I try to eat 4-5 small meals a day, but become so nauseous that I am luck to have toast and possibly an egg for breakfast and soup and crackers later. I get too full or too nauseous for more. The barium upper GI test caused many bouts of copious vomiting, followed be diarrhea. My doctor again said to eat small meals 4-5 times a day and to see him again in two months. Because of my age, he will not operate. I have no high blood pressure or cholesterol problems. I am not diabetic. However, I always have a bitter taste in my mouth, belch, and feel constriction at times I my chest at times. I also cannot find a comfortable position in my adjustable bed. My scoliosis and lumbar stenosis seem to put pressure on my mid section as well. Any suggestions?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of bitter taste in mouth while suffering from hiatal hernia . As per your complain bad taste in mouth can be due to causes like oral and dental infections, dry mouth, side effect or allergies to medication or foods, sinusitis, respiratory tract infection, tonsil stones . But in your case the symptoms are due to acid reflux which occur due to hiatal hernia . I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist as well as oral pathologist for proper diagnosis . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics along with proton pump inhibitor . For now avoid eating spicy food and eat at least 2 hour before going to sleep . You can gargle with Flavored mouthwash. You should drink plenty of water. Do steam inhalations with a few drops of Eucalyptus oil in boiling water and maintain a good oral hygiene.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
