What Causes Bloating And Frequent Urge To Defecate After Intestinal Obstruction Repair?

I am a 43 year old female that had a duodenal switch with bileopancreatic diversion in 2003. In 2004, I had a bowel obstruction and in emergency surgery they removed about 4 feet of bowel. For the last 2-3 weeks, I have been experiencing bouts of bloated stomach, pencil thin stools, frequent urge to have a bowel movement without success, and diarrhea. I have been getting heartburn or belching after meals. I have lost weight recently without reason, yet feel cravings for food.

Hi,

Bloating, frequent urge to defecate and changes in bowel movements after intestinal obstruction repair can be caused by several factors. In your case, some possible causes may include:
* Intestinal adhesions: During surgery, scar tissue or adhesions can form in the abdominal cavity, causing the bowel to become stuck or twisted. This can result in abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel movements.
* Changes in bowel anatomy: After surgery, the structure and function of the intestine may be altered, which can affect bowel movements and cause bloating.
* Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO): After bowel surgery, the balance of bacteria in the gut may be disrupted, leading to an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. This can cause bloating, gas, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
* Pancreatic insufficiency: In some cases, bowel surgery can affect the pancreas's function, producing digestive enzymes that help break down food. If the pancreas is not functioning properly, it can lead to malabsorption of nutrients, weight loss, and digestive symptoms such as bloating and diarrhea.
* Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Heartburn and belching after meals may be a sign of GERD, which occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. This can cause a burning sensation in the chest and other symptoms such as bloating and nausea.

Discussing these symptoms with your healthcare provider, who can perform a physical exam and order tests to help determine the underlying cause is important. Treatment may include dietary changes, medication, or further surgery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
