What Causes Blocked Ears Along With Crackling And Popping Sounds?

I am 62, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 9 stone in weight, always had problems with catarrh. 10 days ago had popping and crackling in ears and have been partially deaf since. Had course of erithromycin and Using nasonex with little benefit. I am a regular swimmer and use earplugs but am afraid this may have contributed to problem. Loss of hearing and feeling of blockage makes me feel disorientated and getting quite depressed about it.
