What Causes Blood Clots During Menstruation While On Birth Control Pills?

I am 41 yrs old just started taking birth control again. I had spotting and was told to start the pill. I had then stopped spotting. Never got my period. But I am now 2 weeks in taking the pill and have my period. Is this ok? Also, I get blood clot type periods. This time it was a thick mucus type clot. Never saw that before. What is that about?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I feel you had started pills with spotting in early pregnancy got controlled with hormonal contraceptive but as oral contraceptives are hazardous for pregnancy. So resulted in expulsion of products of conception(explaining mucus white clot with lot of bleeding). You should go to your treating gynecologist to confirm the diagnosis followed by medicines /miner surgery(if uncontrolled bleeding) to complete the process of abortion &stop the bleeding. In case you are not willing for pregnancy get IUD inserted as per doctor's advise.
