Blood in Sputum after dialysis Hi.My father-in-law is undergoing dialysis. He has developed pnuemonia now.Off late we have observed that he vomits and coughs with bloody sputum immediately after dialysis. Is this normal to happen because of the lung infection ?Could there be something else which is causing this problem ?
Hello Thanks for your query. Pneumonia may cause blood in sputum frequently though amount will usually be scanty. Pulmonary embolism usually small peripheral emboli can cause blood streaked expectoration. Lung cancer may cause hemoptysis especially in the elderly smokers. I think he should undergo a detailed work-up for lung condition usually by a high resolution computed tomography scan to exclude differential diagnoses one by one. Thank you.
