What Causes Blood In Urine Along With Headaches And Light Headedness?

Hi Yesterday I was sent home from work due to a headache and being light-headed. When I got home I went to the toilet to poo but I really struggled and when I wiped there was bright red blood on the paper. The water in the toilet was also red. The bleeding finally stopped so I went straight to bed because of my headache. The next morning I felt like I needed to poo and again I struggled but this time my anus was slightly painful and felt a bit tight, however this time there was no bleeding. I m quite concerned as I ve had bleeding from my anus before but only tiny spots on toilet paper, whereas this time the blood flow was heavier. Please help, I m only 17 years old which is making me think it could be worse than just hemorrhoids?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

In most cases, this is sign of uroinfection or kidneys stones. This is mainly self-limiting and doesnt require any specific treatment and you should just be patient and have fluids to promote urination.

Less likely it may indicate possible bleeding in urethra, bladder or kidneys from a popped vessel or some other cause.

IF this continues you should do urine analysis, urine culture and kidneys ultrasound to rule these main causes out. You should drink raspberry tea and plenty of water until you do tests.

Also, avoid sexual intercourse and have to keep good hygiene. You should reduce salt in your diet as well since this could lead to increased risk of urinary stone formation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
