What Causes Blood In Vomit After Swallowing Plastic?
I unfortunately swallowed a piece of plastic that got mixed in with some dried squid jerky. I know for sure that I swallowed it. I thought it would pass but it has been around 24 hours since I swallowed it and I just vomitted. It has been uncomforatable since I swallowed the plastic. When I vomitted, I noticed a little bit of blood. Should I go to the doctor? The problem is that I am in China traveling at the moment.
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Pure plastics have low toxicity due to their insolubility in water and because they are biochemically inert, due to a large molecular weight. Vomiting, retching, can cause a non-trans-mural tear at the gastro-esophageal junction ,which can cause upper gastrointestinal bleeding (a little bit of blood in your case). Bleeding usually stops spontaneously. At best you can take some antacids at the moment e.g. pantoprazole orally 20-40 mg once a day for few days..In case it recurs you should see doctor.
