Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have an employee that just started and he is displaying some interesting movements and ticks. He let s out an occasional single cough. He appears to try to hold them back. He then surges a bit up and down. He also has a shake in his hands and also when drinking from a plastic bottle secures a finger against his face when drinking from the bottle. I sat next to him in the car today that was a bit tight and his jumping was noticeable. He looks in shape but has quite a bit of a belly. He does burp a bit while doing these type of jumping or surging. He definitely tries to hide it and claims to be battle allergies. Any ideas?
Hi there, thank you for your question on healthcare magic. The symptoms you mentioned are suggestive of a Tic disorder, most probably, Tourette's syndrome. Its a neuropsychiatric condition but it doesnt affect a person's level of intelligence. The frequent coughing, throat clearing, eye blinking or any other repetitive movements called tics, are caused by semi voluntary urges to do so, however suppressing such urged lead to episodes of increased urges. Behavioural therapy is the treatment of choice. Its all about learning to keep the urges in control. Hope this helps. Thank you for dropping by healthcare magic
