My mother is taking Primidone for tremors. They only just prescribed it last week as she was admitted to the hospital with speech difficulties and extreme shakiness. She couldn t even hold her fork to feed herself. They did every test under the sun including brain CT s and brain MRI s. Everything was negative and although the tremors didn t seem as intense as they were when she was admitted, they discharged her to home with f/u PCP. Her PCP prescribed Primidone and after a couple of doses the shakiness improved some but not completely. She also takes Tramadol at night and in the afternoon for back pain and peripheral neuropathy. In addition, she takes Gabapentin, and numerous OTC s.....flax, Omega 3, MVI etc. And, she takes Aldalat (ca+ channel blocker for HTN). Honestly, I think she has Parkinsons Disease as my grandmother had the same shaky voice (talked like Katherine Hepburn) and could barely write due to hand tremors. She is seeing a Neurologist this week and I would like for him/her to prescribe a Levodopa medication to see how she does. I ve advised my mother to try if she can, taper off the Tramadol and use Tylenol if she has increased pain. She s been on the Tramadol for years now and she told me today she mostly takes it to sleep now!!!!! My question is: Do you think the Tramadol is potentiating the effects of the Primidone? If she goes on a Parkinson medication, I think she should come off the Primidone to see if the dopamine is helping, Her appetite is also poor poor poor and I think the barbiturate is causing appetite suppression. Please advise.
