Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hi, I just had a bowel movement and the toilet was filled with bright red blood. It was also dripping afterwards. I do take 750 mg of aspirin and also I am taking meds for seizures, depression and now thyroid. Plus sleeping pills and oxycodone for pain of muscular dystrophy. Could these meds be tearing me up?
The commonest cause of painless bleeding during and after bowel movements is hemorrhoids. The bulged hemorrhoid can get ruptured and thus cause lots of bleeding. The medications like Aspirin have anti-platelet effect and thus can increase bleeding. Hence first of all stop aspirin. Continue rest of the medications till your Doctor advises so. Consult a General Surgeon for clinical evaluation, per-rectal digital examination, ano-proctoscopy followed by colonoscopy to rule out any cancer of colon or so. If there are hemorrhoids that have caused the bleeding, you should get operated to remove the hemorrhoids. Till then take rest. See if blood pressure is normal or not. Take stool softeners if there is any hard stools.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T Chandrakant, General Surgeon
