I AM 77 YEARS OLD AND AFTER RECENT VAGINAL REPAIR SURGURY I WAS GIVEN .5 MG DILAUDID, THEN I HOUR LATER GIVEN 50 MG. DEMEROL AND 25 MG. PHENERGAN ALL THRU IV. SHORTLY I QUIT BREATHING, WAS GIVEN MOUTH TO MOUTH AND PUT ON A VENTILATOR FOR SEVERAL HOURS. I AM IN EXCELLENT HEALTH AND HAVE NEVER TAKEN ANY MEDICINE. IS THIS NORMAL DOSAGE FOR ELDERLY PATIENT? I HAVE A HORROR OF BEING PUT TO SLEEP IN THE FUTURE. ADVICE? THANKS, ELAINE
Hi Hydromorphone HCl (DILAUDID) IM/SC dose is 1.3-2 mg, DEMEROL dose is 50 mg to 150 mg intramuscularly or subcutaneously. I think you were given appropriate dose as in elderly due to compromised hepatic/ renal functions dose is lesser than routine. Sometimes aponea as happened in your case can occur and it is normal. Only next time you just tell anesthetist about your problem in past so that anesthetist can mange accordingly. TC
