What Causes Bruise On Feet And Upper Arm With History Of Hypothyroidism?

I noticed that I have matching bruises on the top of my feet, right behind my 3rd and 4th toes. They are not sore to the touch, but I cannot rule out that I banged both feet on something. But I had the one on the left foot a few days before the one on the right appeared. Also, I noticed an area of spotty looking bruising on my left triceps after showering today. I am 48, almost 49; I have Fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, and I am severely overweight. I am 5ft 5in and weigh 250 lbs. I plan on making an appointment with my doctor on Monday, but I was looking for information to know what to ask for or tell. Thanks, Sherry Smith

Hi,

Bruising is not much related to thyroid functions. The most common causes are:

- Low platelet count
- On medicines like Aspirin or anti-platelet or blood thinners
- Hereditary telangiectasia or such disorders

Hence I would advise you the following:
- Tell your doctor all relevant history
- Ask for detailed blood work related to platelet count, bleeding time, clotting time, liver function tests, calcium and as would advised
- Watch for any other symptoms like itching, nausea, change of appetite
- Hence a detailed history and examination supported by lab work can help to know the cause
- Also get thyroid function tests and doses adjusted
- Reducing obesity should be the most important priority

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
