What Causes Bruising And Swelling In Lower Arm Radiating Into Hand?

My mother suffered a proximal humerus fracture to her right arm on 5/15. She did go to the ER. There was of course a lot of bruising and swelling at the upper arm. Now I m noticing the bruising & swelling has travelled to her lower arm & is moving into her hand. She is not experiencing pain in these areas. She is not having any problems with her hand - no tingling or numbness. Is this normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is normal for bruise and swelling to travel downwards due to gravity and the same might be the case in your mother. Hope you have got an appropriate treatment for the fracture with a sling or brace if the bone is un-displaced and ruled out any internal bleeding or nerve damage. If not then I would advise you to do it as early as possible.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
