What Causes Burning Pain In Esophagus When On Medication For Ulcer Treatment?
I am currently being treated for an ulcer caused by H Pylori. Taking Flagyl, Doxycycline, Prilosec and Pepto Bismol for 6 days so far. Last night I took my meds along with some ibuprofen and woke up with horrible burning in esophagus... felt like perhaps a capsule had lodged itself. Drank lots of water and took a couple of Tums. After about 45 minutes was able to go back to sleep. All day today, it is painful. If one of the medications did get stuck and did damage, what can I do to alleviate the discomfort?
Hi, Thanks for posting your query. I am Dr.Ratnakar and I am pleased to assist you. The burning sensation you get could be due to gastroesophageal reflux disease. There is a possibility of you having developed pill esophagitis. Pill esophagitis is common with Doxycycline. I advise you to get an upper GI endoscopy done to confirm it. Take carafate ( sucralfate) for relief of symptoms. Always take medications with lot of water and be in upright posture for at least 30 minutes after swallowing. I hope that answers your question. Regards, Dr.Ratnakar Kini
