Dear Sir/Mam,
I understand the agony of this feeling, especially that it is affecting your daughter's life leading to loss of weight.
Your daughter has reflux disease. When she eats, her stomach produces acid, but she has a loose inferior lower esophageal sphincter that lets the acid go from the stomach to the
esophagus causing these symptoms.
There are many things to do to help your daughter including : lifestyle modification and medical treatment.
1- lifestyle modifications :
a- it is true that even drinking water can lead to her symptoms, however there are certain types of food that can make her situation worse and should be avoided like : fatty foods, caffeine, chocolate, spicy foods.
b- dont eat and sleep
c- Avoidance of tight-fitting garments to prevent increasing intragastric pressure
d- Promotion of salivation through chewing gum to neutralize refluxed acid and increase the rate of esophageal acid clearance.
e- Avoidance of tobacco and alcohol
2- medical treatment :
a- antacids as needed when she feels the burning sensation
b- PPI's like
esomeprazole 40 mg once daily in the morning before breakfast by 30 minutes
if the medical treatments fails then there is an indication for an esogastroduodenoscopy (
endoscopy), and the final treatment would be a fundoplication (surgery to strenghten the lower esophageal sphincter)
Let her start with the medical treatment and lifestyle modifications.
Best regards
