What Causes Chest Discomfort After Having Nissen Fundoplication For GERD?

I oftentimes have the sensation of my ribs closing in on the middle of my back. It is very uncomfortable and sometimes even goes through to my chest. I have had this issue for decades so I am convinced it is not my heart. I used to think it was indigestion, but it does not seem to be related to anything I eat or drink. I recently had a Nissen fundiplication, and while it seems to have taken care of my GERD symptoms, the feeling described above still occurs. Could it be air trapped in there? If so, what can I do? Thank you.

Hello,

It is good to know that after Nissen fundoplication your GERD symptoms are much better. You have a past history of GERD. Now, you are experiencing discomfort in the chest. It can be due to medical conditions like costochondritis, rib trauma, muscle strain, developing heart disease, IBS, stomach/esophageal ulcer, etc.

You are suggested to switch to a boiled food diet for a couple of days. Take boiled food that is easily digestible and soft in consistency. Liver tonics and digestives are effective. Avoid spicy, oily food. Take your food in time. Take small portions multiple times a day. Stay well hydrated & avoid constipation. If needed take laxatives at bed time. This will help to get rid of gastritis.

Avoid sedentary lifestyle, stay active. You can take antacids or PPI's for relief. Get examined by a GP, get a complete medical check up done to detect the pathology causing you discomfort. Get Lipid function tests and cardiac check up done to rule out any developing CAD. Get all the blood workouts, Urinalysis & investigation (X-ray, MRI, CT, etc) done ad get treated at the earliest. Avoid addictions if any, Take adequate rest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
