Hello.
Prilosec is
Omeprazole - a medicine which decreases heart burn and relieves reflux. Your nurse practitioner was right in prescribing it since initially your symptoms included trickling in the throat and coughing, which I presume was mainly after lying down after a heavy meal.
However, since there is no relief an you have developed a new symptom of
chest pain and pain on inhalation, I am led to believe that you actually have a respiratory infection which was initially restricted to the upper airways and has now spread lower down to the lungs. It is unlikely that coughing will give rise to a pulled muscle or a fractured rib. Prilosec also does not cause chest pain.
I suggest you get a chest Xray for confirmation and a
complete blood count which will tell us whether there is any infection and also about the severity.
Fever is generally present in chest infections, but may be absent in diabetics or elderly persons. If it is indeed a chest infections it will need appropriate antibiotic therapy. Any delay may give rise to further symptoms like breathlessness or coughing up yellowish or blood tinged phlegm.
Another reason for the chest pain which is radiating to the back and side may also be due to any heart condition. It may also produce the symptom of pain on inhalation. Hence, you also need an ECG done. This becomes especially important if you have any co-morbid illnesses like
diabetes,
hypertension or a previous heart condition like blocked vessels.
Hence I suggest you visit your physician and start early treatment if you do have the above conditions to prevent some serious complications.
Hope this helps. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Regards,
Dr Geeta
