What Causes Chronic Nausea And Burping After Having Food?

Hi - my stepmother is 76 years old and over the last 6 months has developed chronic nausea to the point that she has no appetite and she is steadily losing weight. She also complains of wanting to burp a lot during and after eating. She has had life-long colitis, but her doctors do not think that is related. After several procedures (i.e.) colonoscopy, barium upper GI, cat scans, mental health exams, ENT Specialist for ears mostly, and second opinions at JHU, no one seems to have an answer. Any thoughts?

Hi,

Noted the history about your 76 years old stepmother having a problem of chronic nausea, burping after food, losing weight; done all investigations like colonoscopy, upper GI Endoscopy, barium studies CT scan Mental health examination, ENT opinion and second opinion at JHU no findings and she is losing health.
The commonest cause I can think about after knowing that all relevant investigations are within normal limits the psychological factor.
s the age advances there are numerous factors that give stress and anxiety, particularly in females.
This causes aerophagia, a condition wherein one swallows air during eating, swallowing, speaking or otherwise, so unknowingly that no one can detect. This accumulated air in stomach causes fullness hence the chronic nausea, hiccoughs, eructations and burping.
Hence I would advise you to take your stepmother to the Psychiatrist again for proper clinical evaluation, management.
Her condition will surely improve.
Also try to change the places she stays in, vacation, change of climate, places also help a lot.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
