What Causes Chronic Nausea?

I have had episodic, chronic, debilitating nausea for over 15 years. Additional symptoms include weakness, lightheadedness, but primarily overwhelming nausea. I usually do not vomit. It may last anywhere from hours to a full day. Some years I have only a few episodes. Other years several; but now it s occurring about 3x/mo. That s new. I had a negative gallbladder US years ago and EGD only found gastritis. Nausea meds are ineffective. Blood glucose does not drop and neither does my BP. I cannot identify any triggers.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Nausea is not a disease itself, but can be a symptom of many disorders elated to the digestive system, including:
1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
2. Peptic ulcer disease
3. Problems with nerves or muscles in the stomach that cause slow stomach emptying or digestion (gastroparesis)
4. Discomfort in your upper stomach that is not related to an ulcer (nonulcer dyspepsia)
5. A condition that occurs when nerves and brain signals prevent food from passing along your digestive tract, even though there is no physical blockage (intestinal pseudo-obstruction)
6. Problems with the area of your brain that controls the digestive processes (autonomic dysfunction)
7. Migraine headache
8. An abnormal change in heart rate when you change your posture (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome)
9. Problems in certain areas of your body, your entire body, such as cancer or infection, and some medications can lead to nausea.
Issues in these body regions commonly cause nausea:
1. Abdominal or pelvic organs
2. Balance centers in your inner ear
3. Brain or spinal fluid
Consult a physician and get evaluated in detail.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Sanjay Kini, General & Family Physician
