What Causes Chronic Pain In The Ankles, Knees And Shoulders?

I am 50yr old female. I have had arthritis in my left thumb for about 5 yrs. Last month, I woke up to the same feeling in my toes, ankles, knees hips back, shoulders, all finger joints, and neck. My doctor has ruled out rheumatoid arthritis, and we can t seem to figure out what is wrong. I am in severe pain and can hardly walk. It was a very quick onset and was wondering if there is a disease or other reason other than arthritis for this complaint.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Considering your complaints and the sudden onset of symptoms, in my opinion it might also be related to gout and systemic lupus, except rheumatoid arthritis.
However sudden onset of symptoms, may occur in rheumatoid arthritis patients.
You have to perform other blood tests (uric aicd level, creatinine, antinuclear antibody titer etc) to diagnose these two other conditions.
Anti inflammatory treatment(ibuprofen, naproxen) and corticosteroids(prednisone) may help in each of these diagnosis, so you should continue using as prescribed by the doctor or consult a rheumatologist for further diagnosis and treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
