My son is 4.5 years old and has swollen tonsils. He has fever on and off since last 3 days and is also complaining of right earache. He has this prob since he was a 2 years old. What is the reason of these swollen tonsils..The dr has receommended antibiotics. Should i start them right away??
The swollen tonsils can be caused by a variety of conditions. Bacterial pharyngitis, viral pharyngitis, of even a tonsillar abscess. I am concerned that these tonsils are in need or being removed. I do think they are causing ore problems for your son than good.
Definitely start taking the antibiotics, regardless of the actual cause, whether it is bacterial or not it would be prudent to start the antibiotics and if the swelling does not improve even request a course of Prednisolone from the pediatrician to assist in reducing the swelling.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
