What Causes Chronic Vomiting And Diarrhea?

HI. My daughter had vomiting & diarrhea last night. She hasn t thrown up today tho she did have diarrhea when she got up. She ate super bland light things today. What is the general rule of thumb of when you can send a child back to school/when they re not contagious? I know it s 24 hours of no fever, which she didn t have. What is it for these symptoms? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

She can start to eat within 4 hours of no vomiting or diarrhea. She would start with small amounts of dry solid food. If this is tolerated, then she can use other foods.

The virus is transmitted via the vomit or diarrhea movements, so if she is tolerating food with no further episodes, then she is fine to go to school.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
