What Causes Colored Mucus, Nasal Congestion And Sneezing?

Three weeks ago I experienced a sudden onset of severe nasal congestion, sneezing or unrelenting need to sneeze, a lot of mucus discharge, unable to sleep laying down and occasional severe headache(2-3). I started taking Claritan daily without much resolve. The last few days I have had colored mucus. Symptoms get worse at night to the point of not getting much sleep. Can this be more than allergies?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello

If you noticed change in color of the mucus, then underlying sinusitis/sinus infection is a concern. Allergies can contribute to sinus infection. ENT examination can confirm the diagnosis and treatment is with antibiotics (Amoxicillin). Please be advised to follow up with primary provider/ ENT specialist for necessary evaluation and management.

Meanwhile, continue Claritin and do steam inhalation twice daily.

Hope this answers your question. Please let me know if you need further clarification.
