What Causes Constant Fatigue And Weight Gain While Taking Levothyroxine For Thyroid?

I started the medicine Levothyroxine 0.075mg for my under active thyroid about 6 months ago & I m taking it every day as directed but i havent seen any kinda positive results in any way & I seem to be more fatigued I mean NO ENERGY AT All VERY, VERY SLUGGISH all the time & everyday My weight is 150 pounds & I m only 5 2 Less than a year ago I was only 100 pounds at 5 2 & this was my normal weight ever since I was in high school & throughout my 20 s/30 s & even well into my 40 s Just the past year I went from 100 pounds to 150 pounds & I feel so uncomfortable & am having problems carrying all this weight I ve been having problems with my breathing going up & down stairs or even when I walk around the block just once I dont eat but 2 meals a day & only snack on fruits & veggies & maybe 2x s during 1 month span I will treat myself to something sweet like ice cream or some dark chocolate so I m not over indulging so I dont understand WHY have I gained so much weight in less than a year & WHY do I ALWAYS, ALWAYS, every day feel so overwhelmingly tired like I dont even have the strength or energy to even lift my arms or walk from the livingroom to the bathroom & back or take a shower for longer than 10 min s at a time because I can barely hold myself up under the water beating down on me cause I feel like I could collapse at any given time I thought that this medicine that I m taking for my under active thyroid condition was going to help with weight loss & this constant fatigue that has been consuming my every day life thats what my dr. said anyway PLEASE HELP I DONT KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO

Hello,

Your symptoms are very typical of hypothyroidism or under active thyroid. The following may be probable causes of weakness or sluggishness other than thyroid problem:
1) Anemia
2) Chronic fatigue syndrome
3) Addison's disease
4) Depression
5) Cardiac tamponade
6) Obesity
7) Sleep wake disorders
8) Obstructive sleep apnea
9) Prolactin deficiency

To those patients who come to my clinic with similar complaints I recommend the following:
1) You can increase the dose of levothyroxine to 0.088mg
2) Daily physical exercise for at least 40 min per day 5 days a week would help reduce your weight
3) You can have becosules capsule everyday to improve your overall health
4) Despite increase in levothyroxine dose, if you don't find any improvement in symptoms, please do contact physician for further clinical evaluation and specific diagnosis

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
