What Causes Constant Joint Pain In The Thumb?

Hello, I have been experiencing constant pain in the top joint of my right thumb for just over 2 weeks now. An X-ray did not show any bone damage but, i have to firmly bandage the thumb up to prevent the top joint from popping every time a bend occured and, this is very painful! Do you have any idea what has caused this please, I have not incurred any fall or known physical injury? Thank you.
